The dance world witnessed history as Lena Kharchenko and Victor Gustafsson excelled in roles outside their primary ones, embodying the spirit of RoleRotation. Their journeys not only broke barriers but also redefined what connection and inclusivity mean in dance.
Lena Kharchenko: Winning Gold as a Leader
At the Copenhagen Bachata Congress 2024, Lena claimed first place as a leader, a role she had only recently embraced. Reflecting on her journey, Lena shared, “Over the past six months, I was facing some connection issues being a follower. This experience pushed me to take a new perspective, and I realized that the best way to find the joy and flow of dance was to temporarily switch my attention into the leader role. This decision helped me to take responsibility of my own emotions and expectations and found the balance between connection and technique.”

Though initially hesitant to compete in another role, Lena trusted herself. In the finals, she danced wholeheartedly for her partner, Marta Klimonda, prioritizing connection over performance. “I wasn’t entirely confident I was ready to compete in another role but I decided to give myself an opportunity to show what is dancing means to me. In the final I was 100% dancing for my amazing partner Marta Klimonda and I felt so present in the moment to made my best for her and I felt the same from her as well. And it was the first time for me when inner couple connection was more important than show in a competition. It gave us a gold medal and proves for me that bachata is more than just a moves – it’s a special magic that appears between partners with a lot of respect, personal space, love, care and attention.”
Her gold medal was not only a victory on paper but a testament to the power of presence, balance, and the joy of exploring new possibilities in dance. The dance world evolving.
Victor Gustafsson: Rediscovering Joy as a Follower
At the Tallin Bachata Experience 2024, Victor made waves by securing third place as a follower. After years of leading, he had begun to feel disconnected. “IDuring my first year of bachata I was quickly known as the guy who danced as a lady,” he explained. RoleRotation gave him the freedom to explore following, a role that reignited his passion for dance.
Victor shared, “Dancing both roles has meant a possibility for me to connect with everyone instead of only the half but it hasn’t been easy. As a man that follows, I’ve found it more rare to find leaders who truly connect, with a few exceptions. However, almost three years later I’m happy to see a small difference and with that, a development of the dancing community. I truly believe this is something that will grow bigger and get more accepted with time wherever I go” For him, the experience was transformative, as he connected more deeply with partners and the dance community. “Dancing both roles has meant a possibility for me to experience the true essence of a person with everyone instead of only the half.
“However in competition, I continued leading since it was my first role I learned and my safe space. But recently I’ve felt more and more disconnected in my leading due to social expectations, looking for connections, injuries and putting pressure on myself being a leader. I needed a change for my own sake and health and rolerotation has helped me understand that I’m not only stuck to one role. I decided to compete for the first time as a follower to really challenge my self and dance the way that made me happier. Getting to top three wasn’t my only win, I also found a part of myself and experienced so much more joy with other dancers.”
Victor also acknowledged the challenges men face when following, noting that “while it’s rare to find leaders who truly connect, I see progress in the community, and I believe this change will continue to grow.”
Rolerotation J&Js: 100% Versatility
What makes Lena and Victor’s achievements truly remarkable is that they excelled in traditional Jack and Jill competitions while using only half of their full dance skillset—focusing entirely on their secondary roles. This demonstrates not only their adaptability but also their determination to challenge themselves and inspire others in the dance community.

The RoleRotation Wave is creating new opportunities for dancers like Lena and Victor who seek a platform to fully express their versatility. These competitions celebrate the artistry and connection of mastering both roles, offering a bigger challenge and deeper fulfillment.
Rolerotation J&J competitions give dancers the chance to fully showcase their versatility by dancing both roles. The most recent competition took place during Terra Livre 5 Summer Edition in June 2024, where:

- Catarina Martins (Portugal) won first place in the Amateur category.
- Evan Beudoin (France) and Anna (Ukraine) claimed victory in the Professional category.
The next RoleRotation J&J competitions will take place during the RoleRotation Festival in Cologne (last weekend of December 2024) and at Terra Livre 6 on 17–19 January 2025. These events highlight the inclusivity and creativity of RoleRotation, allowing participants to demonstrate 100% of their skills in both roles.
