New bachata classes are out! (you’ll enjoy these)

Hey, We’ve just released two new classes inside the academy, and I think you’re really going to enjoy these. They’re a bit different from the more technical trainings… These are about dancing, feeling the music, and actually enjoying your movement. We’ve already taught these two choreographies in 6 different countries so we hope you’ll love …

Breaking Barriers: Lena Kharchenko and Victor Gustafsson Redefine Bachata Competitions

The dance world witnessed history as Lena Kharchenko and Victor Gustafsson excelled in roles outside their primary ones, embodying the spirit of RoleRotation. Their journeys not only broke barriers but also redefined what connection and inclusivity mean in dance.

Lena Kharchenko: Winning Gold as a Leader
At the Copenhagen Bachata Congress, Lena claimed first place as a leader, a role she had only recently embraced. Reflecting on her journey, Lena shared, “Over the past six months, I faced connection issues as a follower. Shifting my focus to leading helped me take responsibility for my emotions and expectations.”

Though initially hesitant to compete in another role, Lena trusted herself. In the finals, she danced wholeheartedly for her partner, Marta Klimonda, prioritizing connection over performance. “For the first time, inner couple connection became more important than the show. It proved to me that bachata is more than just moves—it’s about respect, personal space, care, and attention.”

Her gold medal was not only a victory on paper but a testament to the power of presence, balance, and the joy of exploring new possibilities in dance.

Victor Gustafsson: Rediscovering Joy as a Follower
At the Tallin Bachata Experience, Victor made waves by securing third place as a follower. After years of leading, he had begun to feel disconnected. “I needed a change for my own health and happiness,” he explained. RoleRotation gave him the freedom to explore following, a role that reignited his passion for dance.

Victor shared, “Competing as a follower wasn’t just about placing—it was about challenging myself and rediscovering joy.” For him, the experience was transformative, as he connected more deeply with partners and the dance community. “Dancing both roles allows me to experience the full essence of connection with everyone, not just half.”

Victor also acknowledged the challenges men face when following, noting that “while it’s rare to find leaders who truly connect, I see progress in the community, and I believe this change will continue to grow.”

Redefining Social Dance Through RoleRotation
Lena and Victor’s achievements highlight the beauty and transformative power of dancing both roles. Their journeys demonstrate that dance is not confined by tradition—it’s about connection, adaptability, and breaking free of expectations.

As the RoleRotation philosophy gains momentum, these victories prove that social dancing is not just about moves or roles—it’s a shared experience that fosters respect, growth, and deeper connections. Lena and Victor have set an inspiring example for dancers worldwide, reminding us all of the limitless possibilities on the dance floor.

A revolution against heteronormativity in social dancing – A Personal Experience

While dancing with one of my male friends, two women walked confidently to the middle of the dance floor, among tens of other dancers, and pulled us apart. Although odd looks when I followed, as a man, were quite common, this was a shocking experience. We stopped, and it felt like everything suddenly moved in slow motion; I couldn’t even hear the music anymore. I asked them what they were doing, and they ran off.
