What is RoleRotation in Social Dances?

Role rotation is the action of rotating/changing roles in the middle of the same dance. Not just to break gender stereotypes but also to create a more fun, dinamic and respectful “conversation” between dancers. The idea is allowing every single person to express themselves in any way they feel. Created and developed by the international Dancers and Teachers Felipe y Tiago.
Rolerotation as a Social Dance Movement has the goal of inspiring everyone to learn both roles of all social dances and fight for gender equality in social dances.

Rolerotation is both, a Social Dance Skill and a Social Movement.
Rolerotation as a Social Dance Movement has the goal of inspiring everyone to learn both roles of all social dances and fight for gender equality in social dances.
RoleRotation in social dances is an inclusive and respectful approach to the traditional roles of leader and follower. It’s a technique that allows dancers to switch roles throughout a social dance, which helps break down gendered expectations and promotes equality in the dance community.
In RoleRotation, both dancers are encouraged to take turns leading and following, allowing everyone to experience both roles, regardless of gender or other societal norms. The idea is to create a more fluid, balanced, and open environment, where both individuals are equally valued and empowered to express themselves through the dance.
It also provides a deeper understanding of the dance, as each dancer learns the complexities and responsibilities of both roles. The practice fosters respect, communication, and connection between dancers, creating a more inclusive atmosphere in social dance spaces.
RoleRotation in social dances was created by Tiago Adegas and Felipe Ramírez. They developed this concept and technique to bring structure and professionalism to role-switching in dance, specifically aiming to promote inclusivity and break away from traditional gender roles in partner dances. Instead of using terms like “leader” and “follower” based on gender, they advocate for these roles to be seen as equal, regardless of one’s identity, which helps create a more balanced and respectful dance environment.
The core idea behind RoleRotation is to empower dancers to experience both the leading and following roles, enhancing the connection, understanding, and mutual respect between dance partners.
It’s a very important development for making social dances more inclusive and accessible.
