At RoleRotation, our mission extends far beyond the dance floor. We are passionate about redefining social dance through activism, inclusivity, and education, making dance spaces more equitable and welcoming for everyone. This page is dedicated to outlining the core of our activism, its roots, and the objectives driving our global movement.
The Problem: Why RoleRotation Exists
Social dance, while vibrant and joyful, has long been influenced by traditional norms and stereotypes. Historically, roles in dance have been rigidly gendered, limiting creativity, expression, and inclusivity. Many dancers have faced barriers due to these conventions, whether because of their gender identity, background, or personal preferences.
We believe these challenges must be addressed head-on. Dance should empower, not restrict. It should be a universal language of freedom, not confined by outdated norms.
Our Vision
A world where social dancing:
- Embraces inclusivity and equality, with every dancer free to explore both leader and follower roles.
- Provides an environment where creativity, self-expression, and mutual respect flourish.
- Is accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, ability, or cultural background.
Our Activism in Action
RoleRotation isn’t just about teaching dance—it’s about fostering a movement. Here’s how we’re making an impact:
1. Breaking Down Gender Norms
We actively challenge gendered expectations in dance. By teaching both roles to all dancers, and Styling without gender we:
- Promote gender equality and dismantle stereotypes.
- Create opportunities for self-expression that transcend societal norms.
2. Empowering New Generations of Dancers
Our RoleRotation Academy equips students to:
- Learn both roles from the beginning, enhancing their versatility.
- Build confidence and explore their full potential as dancers.
- Explore styling without limitations of gender.
- Spread inclusivity as they become teachers and ambassadors for the movement.
3. Community Engagement and Outreach
From hosting festivals to participating in global dance events, we connect with communities worldwide to:
- Inspire conversations about inclusivity and equality.
- Provide workshops that introduce RoleRotation principles.
- Build networks of like-minded dancers and allies.
4. RoleRotation Podcast
Through our podcast, we:
- Share stories of transformation and growth from dancers around the globe.
- Spotlight the voices of activists, instructors, and students who embody the RoleRotation mission.
- Educate listeners about the broader impact of inclusivity in social dance.
5. Hosting Inclusive Events
Festivals like Terra Livre and other Rolerotation Festivals bring people together to:
- Experience RoleRotation in action.
- Celebrate diversity in all its forms.
- Participate in workshops and performances that redefine social dance norms.
6. RoleRotation Teacher’s Course
Our Teacher’s Course is a cornerstone of our mission to spread inclusivity and equality in social dance. This comprehensive program equips instructors with the skills and tools to teach both leader and follower roles effectively. By empowering teachers, we’re creating a global network of RoleRotation-certified instructors who will inspire dancers worldwide to embrace a more versatile and inclusive approach to dance. With limited spots available, the course has become a sought-after opportunity for those ready to lead this transformative movement in their communities.
Our Objectives
1. Foster Equality in Dance
We aim to normalize learning both leader and follower roles, making social dance spaces inclusive for everyone.
2. Educate and Inspire
Through our online academy, in-person workshops, and podcasts, we seek to:
- Provide accessible education for dancers of all levels.
- Inspire people to think differently about dance and its cultural impact.
3. Expand the Global Movement
Our goal is to bring RoleRotation to every corner of the globe by:
- Establishing partnerships with dance schools and communities and organisers.
- Increasing our presence in festivals and dance events worldwide.
4. Advocate for Inclusivity Beyond Dance
We believe that the principles of equality and inclusivity in RoleRotation extend beyond the dance floor. Our activism serves as a model for creating inclusive spaces in all areas of life.
5. ⚠️ Don’t Be Fooled by Visibility
Just because RoleRotation is growing doesn’t mean the problem is gone.
- Dancers are still rejected on the dancefloor for dancing the “wrong” role.
- Women are still told they’re “too bossy” when they lead.
- Men are still laughed at for following.
- Teachers still say “ladies and men” in classes, on stages, at festivals.
- RoleRotation dancers are still excluded, overlooked, or seen as “weird.”
- Organizers still structure festivals based on binary roles or gendered passes.
- And many dancers still leave the scene because they can’t find a place to just be who they are.
Just because you don’t see it…
doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
That’s why RoleRotation still matters.
That’s why we still speak up.
That’s why we’re not done.
