Everything Started Because of Love and Passion
Cheli Latinesa, from Taiwan, and Fran Gallardo, from Malaga, are the founders of this festival. The name “Latinesa,” coined by Fran, represents the fusion of Latina (Latin girl) and Taiwanesa (Taiwanese girl), reflecting Cheli’s deep connection to, love for, and understanding of both cultures. Fran, originally from Malaga, came to Taipei to pursue a PhD and has always been passionate about introducing the Spanish culture and products to Taiwan.

Cheli has had a passion for dance and music from a young age and has travelled and worked in Peru, Mexico, and Argentina to immerse herself in Latin culture. When she moved to Malaga, she began learning salsa from Anita, Bersy, Noelia and Irena—some of the world’s most renowned salsa dancers. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Cheli and Fran returned to Taiwan and launched their company, Andaya, to bring the finest Spanish wines and gastronomy to Taiwan. Concurrently, Cheli started teaching salsa and promoting Latin culture and language. In 2023, Cheli and Fran invited her mentors Noelia and Irena, one of Spain’s most famous same-gender Latin dance couples, to Taiwan. This marked the inaugural year of the festival.
Cultural and Social Impact
After Noya, a renowned makeup artist, joined Andaya as a social media manager and Cheli’s dance assistant, and Remi came on board as an administration supervisor, Andaya hosted its second edition. This edition has already made a significant impact, with an increasing number of male followers and female leaders appearing on the dance floor in Taiwan. Beyond advocating for LGBTQ rights and visibility in the region, the festival promotes cultural exchange and understanding between Latin America and Asia. The performance of dancing lions and dragons at the opening impressed the international audience and showcased the beauty of Taiwanese culture.
